Meaning of IP Protection Rating
First Number (Dustproof Rating):Ranges from 0 to 6, indicating the ability to protect against the intrusion of solid foreign objects. The higher the number, the stronger the protection. For example, rating 0 provides no protection, while rating 6 completely prevents dust intrusion.
Second Number (Waterproof Rating):Ranges from 0 to 8, indicating the ability to protect against the intrusion of liquid water. The higher the number, the better the waterproof performance.
Dustproof Rating (First Digit)
Dustproof ratings range from 0 to 6, representing the equipment's ability to protect against dust:
IP0X: No protection, completely no dustproof capability.
IP1X: Protects against the ingress of solid objects larger than 50mm in diameter.
IP2X: Protects against the ingress of solid objects larger than 12.5mm in diameter.
IP3X: Protects against the ingress of solid objects larger than 2.5mm in diameter.
IP4X: Protects against the ingress of solid objects larger than 1mm in diameter.
IP5X: Protects against dust ingress, but not completely; a small amount of dust can be tolerated inside the equipment.
IP6X: Completely protects against dust ingress; the inside of the equipment is dust-free.
Specific Waterproof Rating (Second Digit) and Requirements
- IPX1: No effect from vertical dripping water; can be placed in a sheltered location during light rain.
• IPX2: Unaffected by dripping water at a 15° tilt, slightly stricter than IPX1, suitable for equipment placed at an angle.
• IPX3: Resistant to water spray from angles up to 60°.
• IPX4: Resistant to splashing water from all directions.
• IPX5: Resistant to jet spray, withstands strong jet spray from all directions.
• IPX6: Resistant to strong jet spray, withstands strong water flow from all directions.
• IPX7: Resistant to immersion, can be submerged in water at a certain depth and for a certain period of time, such as within 1 meter and for no more than 30 minutes.
• IPX8: Resistant to continuous immersion, can be continuously submerged in water at a certain depth and for a certain period of time, such as connectors used in deep-sea exploration equipment.
There is a specially defined rating: IPX9K.
Previously, IPX4K, IPX6K, and IPX9K were exclusive to the automotive industry, but later their application expanded to other industries.
In the ISO 16750, DIN 40050, and ISO 20653 series, IPX9K is the most stringent waterproof rating. This includes the IPX9K test in the domestic automotive industry standard QC/T417.1-2001, "Test Methods and General Performance Requirements for Automotive Wiring Harness Connectors."
With subsequent updates to standards and the addition of new application areas, the application fields of IPX9K have continued to expand.
• IPX9K: The highest waterproof rating, capable of being cleaned under high temperature and high pressure conditions, suitable for food processing equipment, agricultural machinery, high-pressure washers, and other equipment.
